At the start of this, the 21st century, you may be surprised to know that, following St Clare of Assisi, you will find here in Southern Africa a number of contemplative communities of sisters.
They lead a life of regular community prayer, silent contemplation and joyful community living. Their concern is for our society and the hopes and needs of everyone.
The followers of St Clare associated with the Capuchin Friars are known as Capuchinesses and those associated with the Friars Minor are called Poor Clares.
There is a Poor Clare community in Namibia, near Windhoek and one outside Kokstad in KZN. The Poor Clare
Capuchinesses are in Umzumbe on the KZN South Coast and at Swellendam in the Cape.
St Clare and St Francis together are regarded as the founders of the Franciscan Family. They very much relied upon each other for spiritual and practical advice and support.
This close relationship between the friars and the followers of St Clare continues to this day.
