ON APRIL 16TH, 1209 THE FRANCISCAN FAMILY WAS BORN.

On that day, with some twelve companions, St Francis of Assisi (1182 - 1226), was received by Pope Innocent III.

The Pope gave Francis and his companions his (verbal) approval for their chosen way of life: to live the

Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

The various branches of the Franciscan Friars (the Friars Minor, Capuchins and Conventual Friars) are together known as:

The First Order of St Francis

In 1212 Clare and others joined Francis and they established a contemplative Order of nuns which today is known as:

The Second Order of St Francis

Ordinary people, rich and poor, wanted to follow the inspiration of St Francis without leaving home or work.

It was in 1221 that this final branch of the Franciscan Family was born. It soon came to be known as:

The Third Order of St Francis
